Cheshire Businesses Offer Ex-Offenders a Fresh Start
Eleven people already back in work through a new county-wide employment initiative
Just three months after its launch, Fresh Start is already helping to break the cycle of re-offending in Cheshire. The scheme, led by Police and Crime Commissioner Dan Price, has supported 11 ex-offenders into sustainable employment, with more placements on the way.
Working in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions, Probation Service and specialist provider Tempus Novo, Fresh Start connects employers with job-ready candidates while offering ongoing support to both businesses and employees. Since September, more than 100 individuals have been referred, with roles secured in customer relations and warehousing across the county and four further placements in the pipeline.
Major employers such as Chester Zoo are among those opening their doors, helping to provide meaningful career opportunities rather than short-term fixes. The initiative aims to place 100 ex-offenders into work by September 2026, recognising that employment, alongside stable housing and positive relationships, is one of the most effective ways to reduce re-offending.
Dan Price said the programme is about more than jobs: it is a practical way to reduce crime and strengthen communities by giving people a genuine second chance. Chester Zoo’s Chief Executive, Jamie Christon DL, added that the organisation is proud to support the scheme and act as a gateway to employment for people ready to rebuild their lives.
Tempus Novo founder Steve Freer and co founder Valdemar Wawrosz described Fresh Start as a proven, scalable model that supports businesses, boosts the local economy and delivers real reductions in crime.
Fresh Start is already reshaping lives – and helping to make Cheshire safer, stronger and fairer for everyone.
