Tempus Novo Pioneers the UK’s First Serving-Prisoner HGV Apprenticeship through Unique Three-Way Partnership
Tempus Novo has broken new ground in the UK prison-rehabilitation landscape by launching the country’s first ever HGV Class 1 apprenticeship for a serving prisoner delivered in a unique way with the collaboration of HMP Hatfield and a world leading giant logistics employer.
Unlike anything else currently operating in the UK the program allows a serving prisoner to train work and qualify as a professional HGV driver while still in custody. Through Release on Temporary Licence (ROTL) the participant works community-based night shifts where he completes all mandatory theory and practical training and will emerge with a full Class 1 licence and a guaranteed permanent job on completion.
While other schemes offer pre-release training in-prison workshops or post-release employment opportunities, none combine ROTL employment a full professional apprenticeship, licence attainment, and guaranteed long-term career progression during custody. This makes the Tempus Novo–Partner–Hatfield model the first and only one of its kind nationwide.
Central to bringing this ambitious partnership to life has been the tireless work of Caroline Wattley, Operations Manager at Tempusnovo, whose determination and coordination made the complex program possible. From aligning prison schedules and training requirements to managing employer engagement and overcoming logistical barriers, her effort has been pivotal in transforming a bold idea into an operational life-changing reality.
The apprentice has already passed key elements of his training and is now moving into the buddying phase, marking a major step toward a stable career that begins even before release.
Tempus Novo’s pioneering approach not only provides a long-term skilled career pathway but also demonstrates how genuine rehabilitation can succeed when employers, prisons, and dedicated individuals work together. This innovative model is now attracting attention as a potential blueprint for future partnerships across the UK
